Do I need an Apple Music subscription? No. The default Preview Clips mode plays Apple’s supplied previews, up to 30 seconds. Full Playback (Settings ▸ Music) supports selected clip offsets and requires an active Apple Music subscription.
I hear nothing when a clip should be playing. Check that Refrain has Apple Music access (iPhone Settings ▸ Refrain ▸ Media & Apple Music), that the ring/side switch isn’t on silent, and that the volume is up. Preview clips need an internet connection.
The clip is the wrong song. Songs are matched to the Apple Music catalog by title and artist. Open the song from its deck and tap Correct recording to pick the right recording.
The clip starts at a boring part. For subscription playback, open the song from its deck and adjust Clip start offset. Preview segments are chosen by Apple and cannot use a custom offset.
Why only a few prompts today? Refrain is built around short daily sessions. Today shows what’s due plus a limited number of new prompts. Raise New Prompts/Day in Settings ▸ Study if you want more.
Can I practice before a review is due? Choose Study ahead on Today or in a deck. This reviews up to 20 upcoming prompts; your ratings update their future review dates without using more of your new-prompt allowance.
AI deck generation failed. AI generation runs only on-device and requires iOS 26 or later with Apple Intelligence enabled and its model ready. If unavailable, create a deck manually or import a playlist. Try a more specific prompt (“female-fronted 90s alt-rock”) if the result looks thin.
How do I delete my data? Settings ▸ Data & Privacy offers Reset Study Progress, Delete AI-Generated Decks, and Reset All Data. Deleting the app removes everything — nothing is stored on our servers.
Which iPhones are supported? iPhone running iOS 18 or later. On-device AI requires Apple Intelligence (iOS 26 or later).
